Rene' traveled across the ocean to New France looking for adventure in 1659. Two years later on an outing to cut stone he would find himself in the middle of an ambush by warriors of the Mohawk and Oneida tribes. He would be captured and tortured before finally being adopted by the Oneida. Rene' would eventually make his escape, but would never trust any members of the Iroquois Nation. This distrust would eventually, years later, save the life of not only himself but the large family he would raise out on the outer edges of Quebec, New France.
