Joanne Macgregor: The idea for Scarred came to me while I was lying wide awake and jet-lagged in the middle of the night. The image of a girl with a horrible scar across her face standing in front of a class of teens, one of whom was glaring back at her with real venom, literally popped into my head. The picture packed such an emotional punch - the girl thought he was repulsed because she must look ugly, but I knew he had another, secret reason (though what it was, I hadn't yet figured out).
I began exploring that scene in my mind – who was that girl and how had she gotten the scar? What was really driving the boy's reaction? Where had they previously met? And the story grew from there.
I'm fascinated by the idea that we are all scarred, inside and out, but we have a choice about how much we let that define us.
Life leaves you scarred. Love can make you beautiful.
