More About This Book

When and Why Should Someone Read It?

Artistic Badassery is for the moment when you're tired of second-guessing your ideas, comparing yourself to others, or feeling like you've lost the creative spark you once had. Maybe you're a writer or artist struggling with a block, a creative professional feeling burned out, or someone who's spent years putting their own dreams on hold. Through an imaginative journey across seven magical villages, you'll explore practical ways to quiet your inner critic, release perfectionism, reconnect with your instincts, and rediscover the freedom to experiment and play. You'll come away with tools to approach creativity with more confidence, less pressure, and a renewed sense of possibility—whether you're returning to an abandoned passion or finally ready to try something new.

Themes, Ideas & Atmosphere

1. Creative Self-Trust and Permission: Reclaiming your authentic creative voice by challenging limiting beliefs, self-doubt, comparison, and the pressure to meet someone else's definition of success.

2. Mindfulness and Creative Flow: Using mindfulness, attention, and research-informed practices to quiet mental noise, reduce overwhelm, and create the conditions for imagination, focus, and creative flow.

3. Breaking Through Perfectionism and Creative Blocks: Recognizing how fear, inner criticism, and learned habits interfere with creativity. Replacing self-judgment with curiosity, self-compassion, experimentation, and the freedom to make imperfect work.

4. Creativity as an Imaginative Journey: Rather than following a conventional self-help program, readers travel through seven fantastical villages—Permission, Sanctuary, Flow, Cages and Keys, Sacred Ground, Alchemy, and Infinite Treasure—encountering magical characters, psychological insights, practical exercises, and opportunities for personal discovery.

Overall Tone and Approach: Playful, irreverent, compassionate, and occasionally mystical, blending psychology, creativity research, mindfulness, humor, and imaginative storytelling. The emphasis is on rediscovering creativity as a natural part of being human rather than another measure of productivity or achievement.

If You Loved These, You'll Love This

The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron: Shares the belief that creativity is available to everyone and that self-doubt, fear, and limiting beliefs can keep us from accessing it. Artistic Badassery takes a more playful, unconventional approach, using an imaginative journey through seven magical villages alongside practical exercises and creativity research.

Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert: Shares an emphasis on creative courage, curiosity, and letting go of perfectionism and the fear of failure. Artistic Badassery goes further into the psychology behind creative blocks, combining therapeutic insights, mindfulness, and research-informed tools to help readers change the habits that keep them stuck.

Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn: Reflects the book's emphasis on mindfulness, present-moment awareness, and quieting mental noise. Artistic Badassery applies these principles specifically to creative expression, helping readers reconnect with their instincts, find their flow, and create with less pressure and self-judgment.

Together, these comparisons capture the book's distinctive combination of creative self-discovery, psychological insight, mindfulness, and irreverent, fantastical storytelling.

The Story Behind the Book

I've spent more than 25 years working with writers, artists, and creative people as a licensed therapist, creativity coach, teacher, and fellow writer. Again and again, I've watched talented people struggle with perfectionism, self-doubt, comparison, and the fear of getting it wrong. I've experienced those struggles myself.

One turning point came during a trip to Egypt, when a stubborn camel refused to move. Forced to sit quietly in the desert, I stopped fighting my writer's block, became fully present, and unexpectedly found the inspiration I'd been chasing. That experience sparked a lifelong fascination with the connection between mindfulness and creativity.

Artistic Badassery grew from that curiosity, decades of working with creatives, and conversations with psychologists, neuroscientists, and creativity researchers. I wanted to combine what I've learned into something practical, psychologically grounded, and genuinely fun—a journey that helps people stop fighting their creativity and start trusting it again.

The Central Question

At the heart of Artistic Badassery is a question: What if you're not lacking creativity, but have simply learned to distrust it?

So many people have absorbed the belief that creativity requires exceptional talent, constant productivity, or perfect results. They compare themselves to others, silence their instincts, and abandon ideas before giving them a chance. What once felt exciting and natural becomes another source of pressure and self-judgment.

Through seven imaginative villages, psychological insights, mindfulness practices, and practical tools, the book challenges those beliefs and helps readers reconnect with their natural curiosity, courage, and creative voice.

The transformation is from striving and second-guessing to trusting and creating. I want readers to finish the book understanding that they don't need someone else's permission, a flawless idea, or a different version of themselves to begin. They can embrace their imperfections, take creative risks, and find joy in the process again.

Creativity isn't something they have to earn. It's something they can reclaim.
