Book Description
GET THIS BOOK ON AMAZONAll We Keep Buried is a character-driven psychological suspense novel set in rural Nebraska during the late 1990s.
With elements of domestic suspense and dark women's fiction, it examines deception, fractured relationships, and the consequences of uncovering long-buried truths.
At its heart, the novel is about the ripple effects of a missing child investigation and the hidden lives of the people drawn into it. What begins as the disappearance of one young boy evolves into a layered mystery involving an earlier unsolved case, old resentments, conflicting loyalties, and a community forced to confront uncomfortable truths. As past and present become increasingly intertwined, the line between victim and suspect begins to blur.
The story is told through emotionally complex characters whose personal struggles are as compelling as the mystery itself. Kiera McKenna must navigate a controlling marriage, a strained relationship with her adult son, and the growing realization that the people she trusts may be keeping dangerous secrets. Rather than relying on graphic violence or relentless action, the novel builds suspense through psychological tension, moral ambiguity, and the gradual revelation of clues that reshape everything readers think they know.
Themes of manipulation, trust, grief, betrayal, justice, and resilience are woven throughout the story, creating a mystery that is as much about human nature as it is about solving a crime. Readers who enjoy atmospheric psychological suspense, domestic suspense, missing-person mysteries, and character-driven fiction with unexpected twists will find a story that balances emotional depth with steadily escalating suspense.

The suspense builds steadily, allowing the characters and their relationships to drive the story as much as the mystery itself.
As the story unfolds, you'll likely experience grief, heartbreak, frustration, hope, relief, and, ultimately, satisfaction as the truth finally comes to light. You'll find yourself urging the characters to keep going, even when the answers seem impossible to face, because you know what's at stake. The Story Behind the Book
The idea for All We Keep Buried started with a question I couldn't shake: What if a man from my own past turned out to be a killer? I began imagining the woman who actually married him—a shy Korean woman growing up in an overwhelmingly white community in western Nebraska. What would years of emotional control do to her confidence? How would she see herself? More than anything, I wanted to write about her finding the courage to stand up for herself and finally find her voice.
The story was also shaped by my own experiences. I lived in Nebraska during high school and college, and after graduating I worked for a small-town newspaper. I wanted to revisit that world—the influence of local media, the power a newspaper publisher could have in a small community, and the way public opinion could be shaped long before social media. I also wanted to set the story in the late 1990s, when there was no Amber Alert system and communication between law enforcement agencies was far less coordinated, creating opportunities for mistakes, misunderstandings, and manipulation.
Another inspiration came from my time as a journalist. While researching the Cold War, I visited abandoned missile silos in western Nebraska. I've never forgotten those lonely, haunting places, and years later they became an important setting in the novel.
At its heart, though, All We Keep Buried is about family. I wanted to explore a woman whose relationship with her adult son means everything to her, yet she can't understand why he's pulling away. Her determination to save that relationship—and her willingness to risk everything to uncover the truth—became the emotional heart of the story.
The Central Question
The story also asks how far people will go to protect their secrets, and what those secrets ultimately cost. As buried truths surface, characters are forced to confront grief, betrayal, and the consequences of choices made years earlier.
More than anything, I hope readers close the book thinking about the quiet courage it takes to face painful truths instead of hiding from them. I hope they remember that ordinary people are capable of extraordinary bravery, that healing often begins with honesty, and that the truth has a way of finding its way to the surface—no matter how deeply it's been buried.
