More About This Book

When and Why Should Someone Read It?

Read The Spirit of a Rising Sun when you’re craving an immersive epic fantasy filled with political intrigue, rebellion, war, and morally complex choices. It’s for readers who want to get lost in a richly imagined world while following ordinary people caught in extraordinary political upheaval.

Themes, Ideas & Atmosphere

Political revolution, resistance to empire, building a society without rulers, and the conflict between different visions of freedom. The story mixes political intrigue and rebellion with an expansive fantasy world, a large cast, and a slow-burn romance that develops as the characters are drawn deeper into the conflict.

If You Loved These, You'll Love This

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang for its combination of epic fantasy, politics, revolution, and war; The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie for its large cast, morally complicated characters, and competing political interests; and The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin for its exploration of anarchism, hierarchy, and what a society without conventional rulers might actually look like.

The Story Behind the Book

I wanted to write an epic fantasy that explored not only rebellion against empire, but what people might actually build in its place. I became fascinated by the idea of a society without rulers, organized around a radically different economy and set of social relationships, and what happens when those ideas collide with the existing world. At the same time, I wanted to weave a love story into that larger political struggle, with two people growing closer as they become caught up in a movement much bigger than themselves.

The Central Question

At the heart of the book is the question of where people look for freedom, security, and hope. Oyza begins the story dreaming of escape and imagining that somewhere beyond her own captivity there must be an answer waiting for her. Instead, she finds herself drawn into a much larger struggle over empire, class, political power, and whether people can organize society according to fundamentally different principles. Her growing relationship with Yars becomes part of that journey as they search for a place in this new world.

I want readers to come away thinking about what it takes to create meaningful political change, and whether another kind of society is possible. But beneath all of that is something simpler: there are no guaranteed answers waiting for us somewhere else. What we have is each other, our collective struggle, and whatever kind of world we are willing to build together.
