The Third Estate: Devil’s Tango grew from the intersection of my experience as a general surgeon, a U.S. Army veteran, and my fascination with what happens when disciplined people are forced outside the systems they trust.
Medicine and military service both depend on precision, preparation, teamwork, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure. They also require faith in established rules and institutions. I wanted to explore what would happen if a woman who had built her entire identity around those principles suddenly discovered that the people and organizations meant to protect her could no longer be trusted.
That question became Sophie Allard, a former fighter pilot and military medical student whose life unravels after a dying patient whispers a message in her ear. Her medical training, military discipline, and instinct for solving problems help her survive, but they cannot tell her whom to trust.
The second idea I could not let go of involved Kai Lovac: a professional assassin who has survived by treating trust as a liability. Pairing him with Sophie created the central tension of the story. She believes in duty, loyalty, and order. He believes in exits, contingencies, and never depending on anyone. Both are highly capable, but each possesses the qualities the other needs to survive.
