The Story Behind the Book
What really drove me to write this book was my love for the game of pool, both playing it and thinking about it. Billiards sits at a central place on the spectrum of games. At one end, we have overtly physical games, traditional sports like boxing and lacrosse. At the other end, we have more mathematical games, like chess. Pool falls somewhere in the middle. It is a physical game with very obvious mathematical rules and constraints. And in playing pool, one comes to realize that all games are merely mathematics, as is life at large. The only question is: Is the math beautiful or not?
The Central Question
The question at the heart of the book is the tug-of-war between free will and determinism. The game of pool, with its certainty and mathematical constraints, represents the world at large. And while life looks a lot freer than the pool table, it is subject to the same mathematics. People are born a certain way, with certain traits, desires, skills, and shortcomings, and each life is the playing out of a song with a certain destiny.
