Opal and her little brother Rust are happy, content, and cared for in their woodland paradise by their ethereal mother - a god of sorts, at least to them. All is well.
Until one day, when an accident forces their mother to step into sunlight, she is stolen away and inhaled into the sun.
At this point, Opal and Rust are made aware of the world outside the woodland paradise of their childhood - a dark world, where the sunlight has been 'empty' somehow, shining on the land, but not enriching it with life. The world is grey, and bleak and bad things thrive, victimizing communities of huddled townsfolk. The sun sets past this wasteland, and Opal and Rust must traverse it, in order to reach the horizon before it does. Then, hopefully, they can reach her, save her, take her home, and all will be right again. If only things were that simple.
