Edward Monkjack climbed out of the sewer and straight into the middle classes. Born and raised in Tar Pit Terrace, the transition to Bay Tree Crescent was one he took with some reluctance. Suburban England in the late 1950s saw a change, a new division of labour, but the class system still remained. Edward would never be welcomed at the golf club, or invited in for cocktails. He and his wife were despised but politely tolerated in a way only the British can do.
