When I finished reading O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi I couldn't stop thinking about how wonderful it would be to write a story like it. In other words, to write a story that would wow the reader. That is when, and why, I started writing. I really enjoyed thinking up these stories, looking at things from different angles and different perspectives. One of the rejection slips I received said that the stories were more fanciful than imagined. I looked up the meaning of fanciful and decided that even though the editor didn't, I liked the description. It's fun to be capricious and whimsical. I like the idea of taking reader's minds away from reality for a while.

I love stories with a twist and this book didn't disappoint. I'll never forget the bus driver in "The Pact," and "The Kingdom" made me laugh. I saw a few of the endings coming, but most of them were a surprise. A good way to spend a few hours. Don't read too many stories at one time. Savor them.
