What if the reason you don’t feel confident isn’t because you lack confidence—but because you’ve been waiting for confidence to come first?
Confidence Is Action: Become Your Most Brilliant, Brave, and Bold Self challenges one of the most common assumptions about confidence: that you need to feel ready, certain, or fearless before you act. Instead, Tricia Conyers shows that confidence is built through what you do, especially when fear, self-doubt, and uncertainty are still present.
Drawing on practical tools, research, and the honest experiences of women navigating real moments of doubt and growth, Confidence Is Action explores the patterns that keep women waiting, hesitating, overthinking, and playing smaller than they are capable of. It then offers a different way forward: taking purposeful action and using the evidence created by those actions to strengthen confidence over time.
At the heart of the book is the Confidence Wheel®, a practical framework built around three dimensions of confidence: Brilliant, Brave, and Bold. Readers are invited to recognise their strengths and expertise, act even when they don’t have certainty, and use their voice to advocate for themselves and what matters to them.
This is not a book about eliminating fear or pretending self-doubt doesn’t exist. It is for women who want to speak up, pursue meaningful goals, navigate change, take opportunities, trust what they know, and stop waiting to feel completely ready.
Whether the next step is personal or professional, Confidence Is Action offers a practical reminder: you don’t have to find confidence before you move forward. You build it by moving.
More About This Book
When and Why Should Someone Read It?
Read Confidence Is Action when you face moments of fear, self-doubt or uncertainty. Moments when you question your capability, your self-worth and your competency. Read this book when you know you are hesitating, waiting for a feeling of readiness or certainty. It is especially relevant at moments of change or expansion: speaking up at work, pursuing a new role, starting something of your own, making a difficult decision, putting yourself forward, or taking a step you have been overthinking. The book is written particularly for women who are capable and ambitious but still find self-doubt, fear of judgment, perfectionism, or uncertainty affecting how they act. By the end, the goal is not for the reader to feel fearless. It is for her to understand that she can act while fear or doubt is present, recognise the evidence of confidence she has already created, and have practical ways to keep building confidence through action.
Themes, Ideas & Atmosphere
The central idea is that confidence is built through action rather than required before action. Four ideas define the book. First, fear, self-doubt, and uncertainty can exist at the same time as confidence; their presence does not mean you are incapable of acting. Second, action creates evidence, and that evidence changes what you believe about what you can handle. Third, the Confidence Wheel® reveals confidence through three dimensions: Brilliant—recognising your strengths, values, and ways of thinking; Brave—acting when something feels uncertain, uncomfortable, or difficult; and Bold—using your voice, taking opportunities, and advocating for yourself and sharing your thought leadership. Finally, the book combines practical personal-development tools with the lived experiences of eight women, showing that confidence is not one dramatic breakthrough but something strengthened through repeated, intentional choices.
If You Loved These, You'll Love This
Readers of The Confidence Code by Katty Kay and Claire Shipman will recognise the focus on women, confidence, and the ways self-doubt can affect how women show up, but Confidence Is Action places greater emphasis on what the reader can do to build confidence through everyday behaviour.
Readers of Shadé Zahrai’s Big Trust will find a similar interest in self-doubt, behaviour, and evidence-informed personal development, particularly for ambitious women and professionals. The distinction is that Confidence Is Action organises the reader’s development around the Confidence Wheel® and the idea that confidence is an outcome of action.
The Story Behind the Book
The book grew out of a pattern I kept seeing while coaching women: capable women were postponing things they wanted because they believed they needed to become more confident first. They were waiting to feel ready before speaking up, taking an opportunity, changing direction, pursuing a goal, or making themselves more visible. My background in leadership development, behaviour change, neuroscience, facilitation, and coaching made me question that sequence. I also faced the same challenge and doubts in my personal transition from a 20+ corporate career to entrepreneurship. I discovered for myself that confidence follows action, because action creates evidence. That insight became the idea I knew more women needed to embrace: confidence is not simply a feeling to cultivate internally; it is something we actively build. I wrote Confidence Is Action and developed the Confidence Wheel to make the idea practical and to combine it with the real experiences of women navigating self-doubt, fear, uncertainty, ambition, and change.
The Central Question
The central struggle is the gap between knowing what you want and believing you need to feel more confident, competent, ready or accomplished before you pursue it. The book asks: What if waiting for confidence is actually part of what is keeping you stuck? Instead of treating confidence as certainty, fearlessness, or a personality trait some people naturally possess, Confidence Is Action reframes it as something built through what you repeatedly choose to do. The transformation is from waiting for an internal feeling of readiness to recognising that you can move while fear, self-doubt, or uncertainty is still present. The reader should finish the book understanding that she already has evidence of her brilliance, bravery and boldness, and that every intentional action can create more evidence. The lasting idea is simple: you do not need confidence before you act; action is one of the ways you build it.
